What is it like ....

To be the mother of a Type 1 Diabetic?

I personally have experience with this topic because I am the mother of a Type 1 Diabetic but I wanted to know what other mothers would say to the following 14 questions so I turned to the DOC to get some help.

  1. Your First Name:
  2. How long has your child been a Type 1 Diabetic?
  3. How old is your child?
  4. For the management of your child’s Type 1 Diabetes are they on an insulin pump (If on pump which one) or multiple daily injections?
  5. What made you choose this method for management?
  6. How confident are you with managing your child’s diabetes?
  7. What does a typical day look like in your household in regards to diabetes management?
  8. What does a typical day’s diet look like?
  9. Besides a cure what 1 thing would you like to see researchers working towards and why?
  10. What tips or advice would you give to other parents of newly diagnosed Type 1 Diabetic children/teens?
  11. What would you like to see more of out of the Diabetes Online Community?
  12. What is your favorite thing about the Diabetes Online Community and why?
  13. What is your least favorite thing about the Diabetes Online Community and why?
  14.    What 1 thing would you like to see discussed in the Diabetes Online Community that is not discussed enough?
I wanted to get the opinion and insight into their world of dealing with Type 1 Diabetes from a mothers aspect. We asked and they sure did answer.

We will begin with the interview of Allyson,

Q: What is your first name?
A: Allyson

Q:  How long has your child been a Type 1 Diabetic?
A:  My daughter diagnosed on 6/20/09 ~ three years

Q: How old is your child?
A: My daughter is 11

Q: For the management of your child’s Type 1 Diabetes are they on an insulin pump (If on pump which one) or multiple daily injections?
A: Insulin pump ~ Animas Ping

Q: What made you choose this method for management?
A: The pump is said to be a better method of management ~ makes life easier when eating for a person with Type 1. Also meant to achieve better overall A1C's.

Q: How confident are you with managing your child’s diabetes?
A: We're used to the "new norm", but this disease can be very stressful. regardless.

Q: What does a typical day look like in your household in regards to diabetes management?
A: I'm pretty organized, but my husband and daughter are not ~ Often there's a mad search for the glucose meter/T1D supply bag, etc.

Q: What does a typical day’s diet look like?
A: We feed our daughter a normal, healthy diet, as we did before dx ~ The only thing we avoid on a regular basis, unless there's a hypo is fast acting sugar

Q: Besides a cure what 1 thing would you like to see researchers working towards and why?
A: Raising awareness in medical schools and also schools as most doctors, pediatric and otherwise are not familiar with type 1, as they should be. If teachers and staff were educated on Type 1, they would think twice before they make rude and ignorant comments to any child with Type 1.

Q: What tips or advice would you give to other parents of newly diagnosed Type 1 Diabetic children/teens?
A: Don't keep it a secret ~ You did nothing wrong. Instead speak up about Type 1 and raise that awareness. If someone says something hurtful, thinking they know it all, tell them to say something intelligent or shut the hell up.

Q: What would you like to see more of out of the Diabetes Online Community?
A: I'd like to see more posts from them, not just in our private groups ~ Again speak out about this disease let EVERYONE know.

Q: What is your favorite thing about the Diabetes Online Community and why?
A: If it weren't for them, I'd be in the funny farm and I don't think my daughter would be with us today. Also, I love that there's someone here to talk to , day or night

Q: What is your least favorite thing about the Diabetes Online Community and why?
A: The catty, know it all, ignorance from some (they were unfriended).

Q: What 1 thing would you like to see discussed in the Diabetes Online Community that is not discussed enough?
A: The truth of what could really happen. . .It IS scary, but still needs to be talked about more to make people realize how serious Type 1 Diabetes is.
We hope that any of you mothers out there can relate to Allyson's feelings about being a parent of a Type 1 Diabetic and also a member of the Diabetes Online Community.

Tomorrow we will have some more interviews from other mothers of T1 Diabetics so check back often for new posts :)

Besides a cure what 1 thing would you like to see researchers working towards and why? I'd love to see them come out with a transdermal CGM because we JUST took my son OFF the Medtronic CGM - ALL kinds of problems with it including the fact that it HURT him, terribly.
What tips or advice would you give to other parents of newly diagnosed Type 1 Diabetic children/teens? I'm not sure. ...Maybe tell them NOT to freak out because their child will react to your reactions. Being in control allows them to be in control, too.
